about

People In This Town is really just about the overlooked or hidden aspects of a small town that are often taken for granted. Norman, OK is governed by religion, sports, and partying and while that maybe isn’t that different from other places, those are still powerful forces that shape people’s lives. I love driving past this spot just north of town called The Barracuda and just extrapolating from there how it encapsulates all those things at once. It’s not a hip or trendy spot, but people not only go there for all the normal bar reasons but they also go there to celebrate, to mourn, and just live life, whether that’s a positive or negative thing.

lyrics

He would head to the Barracuda
When he thought that he smelled blood
Swimmin ‘round the pool tables
Treading water with the buds
When the lights came on and they kicked em out
He always knew where to go
He said if you had pure intentions
Nothings ever really closed

People in this town
Don’t know what they got
People in this town
Don’t know what they got

She would head to the modern service
Get anointed by the blood
Cause she only felt it coming through
The guitar and bass and drums
When the lights came on and she floated out
She always knew where to go
2 for 1 at the Barracuda
Pure intentions, never closed

People in this town
Don’t know what they got
People in this town
Don’t know what they got

We ended up on the patio
To brace for a massive loss
Halftime shots and a coaching change
And a playbook with a cross
And as the sun went down I was heading out
They came in holding each other close
A Hail Mary and some good intentions
Cause the Barracuda’s never closed

People in this town
Don’t know what they got
People in this town
Don’t know what they got

Beau Jennings Norman, Oklahoma

After years in Brooklyn fronting americana rock band Cheyenne, singer and songwriter Beau Jennings was in search of a new backing band upon returning to his home in Oklahoma. The Tigers – based out of Norman and a wrecking crew of some of the best musicians in the state – were already known as the go-to backing band for songwriters from the area and were a perfect match for Jennings’ new songs. ... more
